Flintshire County Council to hold meeting at County Hall, Mold today over 'single status' proposals

08:51, Nov 3 2009

by Lois York, Flintshire Chronicle

A MEETING will be held at County Hall in Mold today after councillors called for a controversial pay scheme to be scrapped.

Eighteen members signed a motion demanding Flintshire County Council rescind its ‘single status’ pay proposal, which could mean some workers losing as much as £13,000 a year.

The motion to the meeting this afternoon says: “In the light of the impact that has arisen from the single status review, which has resulted in a far higher loss of earnings by individual members of staff than a few hundred pounds that the council was previously informed of, we propose that the council rescind its previous decision to approve and adopt the single status agreement...of August 24.”

The scheme is designed to bring in one set of pay and conditions for administrative, professional, technical and clerical staff and manual workers. Ten years in the making, its aim was to resolve long-standing differences in pay for equivalent jobs. All council in England and Wales are obliged to carry out the review.

In Flintshire it will lead to 1,224 people having their salaries slashed if the proposals are ratified by the three major unions involved – Unite, Unison and GMB.

About 25% of employees will lose out, just over 20% will remain the same and 53% will receive rises.

More than 3,000 job descriptions, affecting nearly 6,000 staff at County Hall have been evaluated and graded. Staff salaries will be protected for two years. Council chief executive Colin Everett has already written to the authority’s 6,000 staff telling them a ballot expected in November will be delayed until 2010.
