THE M6 motorway in Cheshire has been closed following a serious collision, reported at 5.30pm on Monday (January 9).
The closure runs on the southbound carriageway of the M6 between Junction 16 (Middlewich) and Junction 17 (Sandbach), and is likely to be in place for some time.
As the incident has occurred during the busy rush hour period, tailbacks have quickly developed. Motorists are strongly advised to find an alternative route, or to delay their journey.
Details of the incident are still emerging, but appear to involve two separate collisions - one involving two HGVs, resulting in one HGV coming to rest in a ditch, and the other blocking all three lanes.
In addition to this, a separate collision has been reported involving a car and a van. Details of injuries are still being established, but one of the HGV drivers is trapped inside his vehicle.
Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or have any information which could assist the police collision investigator in establishing what caused the collisions, to contact the North West Police Motorway Group by dialling the police non emergency number - 101.
