Petition handed to Parliament demanding rebuild of the Heath Technology College in Runcorn

A PETITION calling for improvements to a Runcorn school has been presented to theHouse Of Commons.

Derek Twigg MP read the request, which had been signed by 266 residents who want the Heath Technology College to be revamped.

The petition claims the Heath needs bigger classrooms, better disabled access and general renovation, and calls for future Government spending debates to consider the establishment’s case.

The institution, on Clifton Road, had been rebuilt as part of the Building Schools For The Future (BSF) scheme.

But the investment was cancelled in 2010. The cash had been due to be given in the form of PFI credits – a controversial loan system for public sector projects.

Mr Twigg told the Commons that his ‘constituents would have significantly benefited’ from the BSF scheme.

Heath Headteacher Heather Mullaney said the cash would not have been wasted. She said: “The Heath is a science, technology, engineering and maths centre of excellence and it is clear that investment in the school will be repaid many times over in the coming years as increasing numbers of students access the outstanding education on offer from The Heath especially if the bid for a 16-19 Sixth Form is successful.

“Since the Government halted the rebuild programme, the governors, the staff and a significant number of parents and our MP are working to find a way of rebuilding the Heath so that the school environment reflects the outstanding teaching and learning that takes place within.

“It is only fair that all students in Halton have access to 21st century facilities to enable them to achieve their potential and go on to acquire the skills, knowledge and understanding that will benefit the borough and its economy in years to come.”
