Bishop escapes action

Nov 11 2003

Daily Post

NO legal action will be taken against a bishop who said gay people should seek medical help.

The Bishop of Chester Dr Peter Forster

Cheshire Constabulary carried out an investigation after a complaint was made when the Rt Rev Dr Peter Forster, Bishop of Chester, spoke out last week.

He said: "Some people who are primarily homosexual can reorientate themselves.

"I would not set myself up as a medical specialist on the subject - that's in the area of psychiatric health."

Dr Forster and the complainant have both been interviewed and officers sought advice to find out if there was any criminal charge that could be brought.

Last night, the force announced no charges would be made against the bishop and the case would be dropped.

A spokesman said: "The issues raised by the complaint have been examined and the complainant has been spoken to.

"The Crown Prosecution Service has been consulted at length and Cheshire Police is satisfied that no criminal offence has been committed as public order legislation does not provide specific offences based upon sexuality.

"The bishop will be spoken to in order to inform him of the findings of the inquiry."

Dr Forster is one of nine bishops, including the Bishop of Liverpool, the Right Rev James Jones, who spoke out about the appointment of Dr Jeffrey John, as Bishop of Reading earlier this year.

Dr John, a celibate homosexual , subsequently declined his appointment.

Dr Forster refused to make any comment last night.
