Assault claim by protester

Dec 30 2003

By Helen Cartwright, Northwich Chronicle

A HUNT protester claimed she was assaulted amid angry scenes at the traditional Boxing Day hunt in Northwich.

The woman, a League Against Cruel Sports spokesperson, said she was pushed to the ground by a hunt supporter at the Cheshire Forest Hunt meet in Lach Dennis.

Nearly 1,000 supporters and protesters turned out at the annual event, run from the Duke of Portland pub, which may have been the last ever as the Government is threatening to bring in legislation banning blood sports.

Though the Countryside Alliance claimed the event went 'very well', a spokesman for the North West League Against Cruel Sports claimed things did not pass off as peacefully as planned.

Spokesman Paul Timpson said the protest was one of the biggest in the country, and he added: 'We had 40 people demonstrating at the event and we were all very peaceful.

'But Dr Jane Evans, who is a spokesman for the League Against Cruel Sports, was pushed to the ground by a hunt supporter and the matter has been reported to the police.'

Supporters maintain the event went as planned. The hunt's master-in-charge, Richard de Prez, said: 'Protesters have been saying that this will be our last hunt for the last six or seven years and we are still here.'

James Bates, spokesman for the Countryside Alliance, added that more people than ever were interested in the sport.
