Park's sex shame

Mar 17 2004

By Jan Roberts, Crewe Chronicle

A CREWE beauty spot is being used as a meeting place by couples indulging in shocking, voyeuristic sexual activities.

Historic Queen's Park, dubbed South Cheshire's 'Jewel in the Crown', is listed on a website as an area where couples and singles can take part in so-called 'dogging' sessions.

'Dogging' involves sex between couples and strangers, with an audience. It came to light after newspaper revelations about former England soccer star Stan Collymore, who confessed he had sexual encounters at 'dogging' sites.

But angry church leaders have condemned the activity as 'seedy and irresponsible' and have urged participants not to visit Crewe.

The Rev Rob Wykes, of Crewe Christian Concern, said: 'All right-minded adults recognise that sexual activity is about intimacy, privacy and sensitivity and not is something that should be carried out in a public park which is there for family enjoyment.'

'What gives these people the right to do whatever they want in a public place? They have completely forgotten their responsibility to the wider community.'

Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council chiefs, who run Queen's Park, were shocked.

A spokesman said: 'We were not aware of this website, or indeed the fact Crewe is mentioned in it. We take every precaution to protect the park from any inappropriate activities. There are three rangers who patrol regularly throughout the day and the park keeper who lives on site and locks the gates at dusk.'

Police say, strictly speaking, 'doggers' are not breaking the law but offences of indecency and indecent exposure could be applied if the activities were seen by a third party who made a complaint.
