Air warning remains in place due to major fire at Widnes warehouse

09:05, Oct 23 2012

by Oliver Clay, Runcorn and Widnes Weekly News

FIRE crews are continuing to battle a blaze at a Widnes recycling warehouse.

The operation has been scaled back to four engines, two hydraulic platforms and a high volume pump.

Fifteen engines and more than 60 firefighters were fighting the inferno at its peak.

Road closures are now limited to Johnson’s Lane and a stretch of Gorsey Lane.

Crews expect to remain at the scene for at least the next 24 hours.

Haulage firms based in the area have been given temporary access but premises immediately adjacent remain shut.

Residents have been urged to keep their doors and windows closed.

A fire service spokeswoman said that although there is no immediate safety concern, mMore air monitoring is being carried out this morning.
