Bridge tolls to be used for congestion busting

TOLLS on the proposed Mersey Gateway will be used to slash bridge traffic with drivers being encouraged to find alternative methods of crossing the river.

Planning chiefs announced the move at a briefing held on Monday to coincide with the submission of detailed plans for the £390m project to the Department for Transport.

As well as covering part of the cost of building and maintaining the Mersey Gateway, bosses said the tolls would also curb traffic on both crossings - with peak-time use of the Silver Jubilee bridge predicted to fall by a staggering 83% by 2015.

The existing Silver Jubilee Bridge would be reduced from four lanes to two in order to make it easier for people to walk and cycle across - while the new 2.13km long, six-lane crossing handled the bulk of commercial traffic.
