Cadet to be honoured for car crash action

Jan 26 2007

By David Holmes, Chester Chronicle

A TEENAGE hero will be presented with a commendation after he intervened on coming across a serious road accident.

Simon Spennati, 16, a fire cadet at Malpas, was travelling back from Manchester on the M56 in the works van last August when he spotted a collision involving a BMW.

The driver lost control after taking evasive action when his BMW, in the fast lane, and a car in the slow lane, both moved into the middle lane at the same time.

The BMW span off and hit a tree with the driver, known only as 'Gary', trapped by his legs and suffering head injuries.

Simon's colleague dialled 999 for the emergency services while he went into the rear of the vehicle to assist the casualty using First Aid skills learned with the fire cadets.

Simon, of Well Avenue, Malpas, said: 'I held his head in case of spinal or neck injuries to prevent any further damage. I was talking to him, keeping him calm and I stayed inside the car with him while the fire service cut off the roof. The whole procedure took one-and-a-half to two hours.

'I have not heard how the man is, I would like to know.I know he works at a hospital because he had an NHS badge around his neck and he was called 'Gary'.'

Simon, who turns 17 next month, would love to become a full-time fire-fighter with Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service when he is 18.

The former Bishop Heber High School pupil, who is currently a labourer for Barlows Electrical, joined the fire cadets when he was 13. His dad Mark has been a retained firefighter at Malpas Fire Station for 27 years.

Simon will receive his meritorious action award from Cheshire Fire Chief Steve McGuirk at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on March 9.

He was previously one of six fire cadets from Malpas praised for their quick-thinking after a microlight aircraft crash at Weston Park in Stafford-shire, in 2005.

The aircraft crashed in front of them hitting two camper vans, leaving pensioner Bernard McEneany, of Solihull, critically injured.

The cadets, led by retained fire-fighters Dennis Rich and Stuart Morrison, immediately cordoned off the scene with tape, kept the crowd at bay and offered support to Mr McEneany's wife Patricia.
