The Rev Michael Freeman, priest in charge at St Michael's church in Blundellsands, near Crosby, said: "It would sadden me if the Anglican Communion became divided over this issue.
"It has come to a head because the issue has become symbolic of a lot of other matters that concern people, such as issues of authority and the search for truth, rather than on its own merits.
"The American Church was wrong to push it as far as it did in consecrating an openly practising homosexual as bishop. The Anglican Church needed to do something to indicate the distress this has created in other parts of the Anglican community."
The Rev Harry Ross, vicar of St Luke's, Walton, said: "The Church of England has always been an uneasy alliance between people of highly different opinions.
"I would not like a split in the Church of England or Anglican Communion but I do think people are entitled to their own opinions on the scriptures and how we interpret them."
James Naughton, a spokesman for the Episcopal Diocese of Washington DC and a Robinson supporter, said the decision changed very little and would have no great ramifications.
