POLICE believe arsonists torched a car in a Runcorn estate. The blaze happened at about 9.50pm on Monday in The Uplands, Palacefields. Emergency services attended following reports. Firefighters extinguished the fire. No-one was inside the car at the time and no-one was injured. A Cheshire Constabulary spokeswoman said it is believed the fire was started deliberately and police have called on anyone who can assist with enquiries to come forward. Officers are following up a number of lines of enquiry including house-to-house enquiries, CCTV and forensics. DC Alison Howarth said: “Fortunately no-one was injured as a result of the incident but it could have potentially been far worse had the fire not been put out so quickly. “We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident, has any information, which might assist with our enquiries, or knows who is responsible to come forward. “Anyone with any information is urged to call Cheshire police on 101 quoting incident number 1064 of October 1. “Information can also be passed on anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.” Colin Heyes, Cheshire Fire And Rescue Service arson reduction officer, said: “This was an extremely serious incident, which could easily have resulted in someone losing their life. “We are working very closely with Cheshire police to find out who could be responsible. “In the meantime we would ask people to be on their guard and please contact Crimestoppers with any information that could lead to an arrest.” |
