Death of vocalist who sang with The Beatles

Jan 25 2007

By Ellesmere Port Pioneer

A VOCALIST from Ellesmere Port who once sang with The Beatles has died at the age of 68.

George (Dale) Roberts, of Woolton Court in Rivacre, was resident singer with The Jaywalkers pop group in the early 1960s.

They played many times in and around the Port and were also very popular on the Merseybeat scene.

They also appeared many times at the world-famous Cavern Club in Liverpool and supported The Beatles on the first-ever evening show there on March 21, 1961.

Mr Roberts also had the rare distinction of having sung with the super-group. It was during a gig at the Aintree Institute that he was asked to join them on stage to perform the Elvis Presley number Feel So Bad.

From 1964 right up until his death Mr Roberts fronted the group The Four Originals who played regularly at functions and dances in and around the Wirral and Merseyside.

He was also a member of the Merseycats, the charity organisation which performed to raise money for handicapped children on Merseyside.

The group played many times at Ellesmere Port & Neston's annual mayoral ball at the Civic Hall.

Mr Roberts will also be remembered for his long association with the motor trade in the area.

After serving his apprenticeship at Offley Brothers in the Port he worked for many years at Hope Farm Service Station and Tate's Garages.

Mr Roberts, who was a widower, leaves two sons and numerous grandchildren.

His funeral service was at St Paul's Church, Hooton on January 15, followed by interment at Overpool Cemetery.
