FIREFIGHTERS are still on site tackling a blaze at a recycling plant in Widnes.

Crews have been working throughout the night after they arrived at the fire at a warehouse on Johnsons Lane last night just after at 9.35pm.

Fifteen engines were involved in the operation at its peak.

Residents have been urged to stay indoors and keep their windows shut.

Drivers were also told to avoid the area.

The blaze covered 30,000 square metres.

Firefighters removed tankers from the site and fought to prevent gas cylinders from exploding.

The warehouse contained plastic and paper for recycling.
