A FIRM that built a major Liverpool landmark is in the running to build the Mersey Gateway bridge between Runcorn and Widnes. BAM Nuttall has signed up to the MGL Consortium. Its past projects include the Royal Liver Building in 1908. The company replaces previous MGL Consortium member Galliford Try Investments Ltd. Halton Borough Council has formally reassessed the revised bidder and has approved the change. Project representatives are continuing with the ongoing dialogue process with all three bidding teams. They aim to conclude negotiations towards the end of 2012 and announce a preferred bidder in the spring of 2013. BAM Nuttall joins Hochtief PPP Solutions GmbH and Iridium Concesiones De Infraestructuras in the MGL Consortium. BAM Nuttall’s origins lay with Edmund Nuttall And Company, which built the Liver Building, work on the Mersey Tunnels and arms factories during the Second World War. The modern firm came into being following a takeover by Royal BAM. MGL Consortium is one of three shortlisted by the project team to compete for a contract to design, build, finance and operate the proposed toll bridge over the River Mersey between Runcorn and Widnes and associated works in the towns. The other bidders are the Balfour Beatty, Bouygues Travaux Publics, Egis Projects consortium, comprising Balfour Beatty plc, Bouygues Travaux Publics and Egis Projects, and Merseylink consortium, which comprises Macquarie Capital Group Ltd, Bilfinger Berger Project Investments Ltd, Vialia Sociedad Gestora de Concesiones De Infraestructuras SL and FCC Construccion SA. Steve Nicholson, Mersey Gateway project director, said: “Changes to consortiums on projects of this scale are not unusual and the fact that a replacement partner has joined the consortium shows there is a high level of interest in delivering this project. “The procurement timetable will continue as planned and we anticipate selecting a preferred bidder in spring next year.” |
