FLINTSHIRE’S two Argos stores could close as the company plans a digital overhaul.
At least 75 stores will shut or relocate over the next five years, the retailer said today (Wednesday).
An Argos spokeswoman said the company would look at which of its 739 UK stores were nearing the end of their leases and then assess their profitability before any decisions were made.
She added that it was too early to say whether the branches in Mold and Flint were under threat.
Argos also has another six stores in North Wales as well two in Chester and two in Ellesmere Port.
Parent company Home Retail Group wants to move shops into shorter leases to be able to relocate as part of a plan to use stores as product pick-up points for online orders.
The company said it would also reduce the circulation of the traditional Argos catalogue – launched in 1973 – as it refocuses the chain as a digital-led retailer.
Home Retail said: “Stores and catalogues will remain important, but their roles will be adapted in order to support a digital offer.”
But the firm stressed having a ‘strong local presence’ remained important.
The announcement comes after a six-month review of the Argos chain to revive the business. In half-year results also revealed today, Home Retail said underlying earnings at Argos were 3% down at £3.3m.
