Hope man who stole meat from Tesco Mold is jailed

by Lois York, Flintshire Chronicle

A THIEF who filled two freezer bags with meat at a supermarket and left without paying has been jailed.

Flintshire Magistrates Court at Mold was told defendant Russell Craig Dingle, 37, had previous convictions for more than 50 offences.

Dingle of Mountain View, Hope, pleaded guilty to theft from the Tesco store in Mold on September 22 and was jailed for four weeks.

But he ended up with a total sentence of 139 days for also being in breach of a community order, a conditional discharge, and he lodged more than £3,000 in fines.

Magistrates said it was a premeditated theft in flagrant breach of a court order, but the sentence would give him a chance to start with a clean sheet when he was released.

The court heard how Dingle only had 6p in his pocket when he briskly walked into Tesco and got two freezer bags.

He went to the meat aisle and put in £174 worth of meat products.

Staff were waiting for him outside as he left without paying, said prosecutor Matthew Ellis.

Dingle told how he had intended to sell the meat to friends at The Avenue in Mold in order to obtain funds.

Huw Roberts, defending, said that the offence itself was relatively low level and unsophisticated.

Dingle had a chaotic life-style but was helping to care for his children and had recently been offered employment.
