DESPITE more than 350 jobs being under threat, the Science and Technology Facilities Council has confirmed its commitment to the future of Daresbury Laboratory.
Last month the STFC revealed it would be shedding 600 science jobs nationwide with the current Daresbury staff of more than 500 being reduced to 140 by April 2009.
Yet at a meeting on January 29 the STFC committed itself to further developing Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus.
A spokesperson for the STFC said: “The council is committed to retaining key scientific and technology expertise at Daresbury in high performance computing, accelerator and detector research, development for next generation facilities, and underpining technologies, and is looking to expand expertise on this site as its plans develop.”
Daresbury’s research on the Synchrotron Radiation Source will be completed by September 2008, resulting in 180 job losses.
The announcement of further redundancies came after a budget review found the STFC to be £80m worse off than it had expected. Staff were emailed inviting them to apply for voluntary redundancy with job losses planned across all departments.
