HALTON landlords have spoken out about the European Commission’s latest proposals to ban the sale of patio heaters to pubs.
Establishments throughout Widnes and Runcorn were quick to install the gas patio heaters in their beer gardens after last year’s smoking ban forced smokers outside.
However, fresh fears over wasted energy, stale smokey air and the emission of greenhouse gases have led to heaters being viewed by many as planet wrecking devices.
John McDonald, landlord of The Bradley pub in Widnes believes that minor environmental concerns should not prevent him from doing business.
He said: “Everybody has got an opinion on it, but from my point of view, it’s my responsibility to keep the customers happy.”
Ste Murty , co landlord of the Red Admiral pub in Runcorn says the EC’s latest plans are just another example of authorities attempting to put an end to pub culture.
“The government brought this on themselves by imposing the smoking ban last year and taking away the rights of smokers,” he said.
