Man escapes Holywell house fire

09:20, Jan 17 2013

Flintshire Chronicle

A MAN fled a fierce house blaze that destroyed the home he shares with his mum.

Sparks from a coal fire started the inferno that ripped through the property in Holywell.

Fifty-year-old Adrian Morris Richards came downstairs to find his lounge on fire.

He grabbed his dog and fled the property on The Strand.

A teenage neighbour grabbed a hose to try to tackle the fire – but was stopped by other people on the estate who were concerned for his safety.

The fire then tore through the rest of the house – wrecking the home Adrian shares with mum Alma Dodd, 70.

Adrian had to be treated in hospital for smoke inhalation and the fire also killed their two budgies.

Alma, who was out the property at a local club when the fire happened, said: “I came back to find the house on fire and fire engines outside, I was worried for my son but thankfully he had got out and was being looked after at a neighbour’s house.

“I am still in shock, it is so upsetting. The fire has caused so much damage to the house and killed my birds.

“At least my son is safe, that is the most important thing. He has though gone to hospital because he inhaled some smoke.”

She added: “He had loaded up the fire for me and gone upstairs.

“He came down after hearing the smoke alarm and found the lounge on fire, something had fallen out the fire to start it.

“He did the right thing, he grabbed the dog and ran out.”

Neighbour George Jones, 15, said: “I was in the house when I heard the alarm going off.

“I went out the house and could see smoke in the lounge of the neighbour’s house. Then Adrian came running out with his dog, he said to call the fire service which I did.

“Then I went to the house and got the hose. I was going to try and use it on the fire but then some other neighbours came over and told me to stop.

“They said it would not help and was too risky. The fire service then arrived.”
