LATEST figures show Merseyrail to be the best performing train operator in the country.

The company that for the four-weekly period ending May 24, 97% of its trains ran on time on the Northern and Wirral lines.

This is the highest percentage ever recorded in the history of the Merseyrail network.

As a result of this performance and similarly good figures over the past 12 months, the moving annual average of Merseyrail trains running on time has increased to 95%, which also represents the highest percentage ever recorded and is an increase of 2.5% compared to this time last year.

The 95% achievement also puts Merseyrail at the top of the UK’s train company performance league table, which means it is officially the best performing train company in the country.

Managing director Bart Schmeink said: “Merseyrail is now approaching the sort of levels of punctuality most people associate with the railways in Japan.

“It’s a fantastic achievement and we are determined to stay at the top of the UK performance league.”

He added: “Our Network Rail colleagues, who are responsible for the tracks and signalling, have played a major role in getting us to these levels.

“In partnership with Merseytravel, we are also working on various station improvements across the network to give people the best possible railway network we can achieve, a network which is already the envy of the rest of the country.”

Simon Whitehorn, Network Rail’s area manager for Merseyside, said: “The record levels of performance that have been achieved in such a short period of time are testament to the hard work and effort by all the staff across the different parts of both the Network Rail and Merseyrail teams.

“I am extremely pleased to see that close working partnership that has been established since January 2007 has now resulted in such an historic achievement.”
