Police may seize drivers' mobiles

Ray Woods, associate secretary of the Southport branch of the Institute of Advanced Motorists, said: "I think something needs to be done with regards to stopping people using ordinary mobile phones, and even with handsfree there is a problem, because when you consider having a discussion, you haven't got the same concentration.

"I think if people know their phone will be confiscated, it's a better deterrent than just telling them not to use it or they'll get a bit of a fine - it's going to cause you a bit of hassle."

Inspector Woosey added: "It would be an ideal way to enforce the law, because if you look at it, they're people's lifeblood nowadays - if you take one away, it's like chopping someone's leg off."
