WIDNES snooker star Andrew Higginson’s hopes of a second giantkilling in the totesport.com Welsh Open were wrecked as he lost 5-0 to former world champion Mark Williams at Newport.
World ranked number 43 Higginson, having knocked out world number eight Marco Fu in the last 32, had the misfortune to come up against an in-form opponent, who produced one of his best performances for years to reach the quarter-finals.
The home favourite from Cwm, ranked 15th, took just 60 minutes to end the challenge of 2007 finalist Higginson, continuing to look on top of his game after reaching the last four of the recent Pokerstars.com Masters.
“That was some of the best stuff I've played in years,” said two-times World and Welsh Open champion Williams. “I play like that all the time in practice, and for some reason it's starting to come out in matches.
“I got to him early with a couple of good breaks, and put him under pressure. I was enjoying the balls going in, and feeling as if I was going to get the long ones. It's nice to still be here at this stage of the tournament, and if I carry on like that I will be a handful for anyone.”
