Stop the gun yobs

Apr 12 2007

By Adrian Short, Widnes Weekly News

A TAXI driver has slammed youths who fired an airgun at his brand new car and pelted it with eggs and stones in a roadside ambush.

Widnesian Alan Edge says it is only a matter of time before the culprits kill a motorist.

He was driving on Birchfield near Farnworth Garden Centre with a woman passenger on April 3 when he saw a seven-strong gang of hoodies waiting in ambush.

He fought to keep control of the car as a shower of missiles struck the vehicle's body and windscreen.

Mr Edge said the police responded to his 999 call within five minutes and as the gang fled, officers chased them down a path in a van and the others attempting to intercept the youths at the other end.

But the gang managed to slip through the net.

After inspecting the damage, including circular holes in the wind-screen and a hole in the wing the size of an airgun slug, Mr Edge is convinced that the thugs were armed with air guns.

He said: 'This is happening to taxis all the time - the previous night my taxi was egged on Lugsdale Road.

'This time there were loud bangs and the customer in the back was quite shaken.

'I got hit by at least three eggs and three BB gun pellets.

I'm sure it was airguns because of the loudness of the bangs and the force that must have caused the damage.

'It's just typical - you go out and spend £13,000 on a new car and then this happens. I've had the car four weeks.

'That's not to mention the fact they are going to kill someone.

'The police says if I'd have been going 10mph faster I would have lost control.

'The problems is you can't react. You are in a no-win situation because you can't confront these kids. They think they're untouchable.'

A police spokesman said the incident was under investigation.
