Swim with sharks to help muscle charity

14:34, Jan 14 2009

by Gary Porter, Ellesmere Port Pioneer

A CHARITY is looking for adventurous people to go diving with sharks at the Blue Planet Aquarium in Ellesmere Port.

The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, which raises funds to fight muscle diseases, has organised a “Discover Scuba” challenge for beginners with no experience.

The event takes place on Saturday, March 14 and is free to those people who raise the minimum sponsorship of £360.

There are currently only three places left so if anyone is interested in being involved they need to contact the charity as soon as possible.

Participants learn the basics of scuba diving amidst one of Europe’s largest collection of sharks, including 10-foot sand tiger sharks, as well as 2000 other fish, rays and conger eels.

Scuba equipment and training is provided under Professional Association of Diving Instructors guidelines.

The shark exhibit is based upon the cooler waters around the UK, allowing the sharks to adapt to a slow and gentle pace of life, ideal for close and safe encounters by divers.

Charles Horton, regional fundraising manager for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, said: “This is a unique and exciting opportunity for anyone who has never tried scuba diving to be part of an underwater safari and come eyeball to eyeball with one of nature’s most feared creatures of the deep.

“Try it yourself and see just how strong your nerve is.”

If you want to take part and are over 16, then call 01244 403012 or e-mail from northwest@muscular-dystrophy.org
