Taxi fares in Halton could rise by 4% as firm hit by fuel rise and rocketing 56% insurance cost

TAXI fares could rise in Runcorn by about 4%if firms’ pleas for a higher limit are approved because of rocketing insurance costs and the price of fuel. Companies have complained that they have been hit by general inflation and whopping rises in fuel and insurance costs. Halton Borough Council’s regulatory committee is due to meet on Wednesday night to consider the proposals. Firms review their fares and calibrate their meters every two years. If given the go ahead, the basic tariff could rise by about 14% from £2.10 to £2.40 for the first 440 yards. Story continues ADVERTISEMENT The incremental increase would fall the further the passenger travelled with five-mile journeys rising from £9.30 to £10 – a rise of less than 1%. Higher starting tariffs would apply to journeys greater than six miles.
