Three of them were dressed in black and one was wearing a pale blue jacket.
DC Michelle Thompson said: “We take any incidents of this nature extremely seriously and we are committed to doing everything we can to trace those responsible. We are carrying out a number of lines of enquiry in a bid to trace the offenders.
“We are appealing for anyone who witnessed what happened or who was in the area at the time and may have seen anyone acting suspiciously or may have seen the offenders fleeing the scene to come forward.”
Cheshire Constabulary said two sightings of one or two marked police BMW X5s patrolling the town centre soon after were part of the subsequent investigation.
