CAR manufacturer Toyota is creating 70 jobs at its engine-making plant in Deeside to meet increased demand. Welsh Secretary David Jones made the announcement today (Friday) and praised the company for its ‘vital contribution to the growing success of the UK car manufacturing sector’. “This is great news for the plant and for Wales,” said plant director Richard Kenworthy. “Our members at the Deeside engine plant continue to demonstrate they can deliver the superior quality and efficiency that are vital for building our presence in a highly competitive marketplace.” The factory on Deeside Industrial Park is now making engines for vehicles made in Brazil and will soon start supplying them for a new car being made in the UK. Recruitment for the 70 roles has already started, the company said. Mr Jones said: “Toyota has made a vital contribution to the growing success of the UK car manufacturing sector and to the creation of sustainable jobs in North Wales. “It is a glowing example of collaboration between a global company and the UK, and a demonstration of why Wales continues to be a prime location to invest and do business.” Mr Jones will later be given a St David’s Day tour of the plant and will meet senior Toyota executives and some of the 500-strong workforce. The 115-acre Deeside plant opened in 1992 and was the first factory outside Japan to build Toyota's hybrid engine. Two years ago production at Deeside shut down for five days to conserve parts after a devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan affected its supply, which put orders at risk and meant some employees lost pay. But Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami said the future now looks bright. “This is excellent news for the plant and the area,” he told the Chronicle. “The situation is a really glowing endorsement of the workforce and the efforts they’ve put in.” |
