FIREFIGHTERS dramatically rescued drivers from the roofs of lorries after a collision led to an oil spill on a major road.
At just after 3.55am today (Thursday, September 13) emergency services were called to Road Street in Tarporley after two heavy load vehicles collided on the A49.
Police closed the road while firefighters from the Rope Rescue Unit battled to rescue two casualties from the roof top of one of the lorries as oil spilled onto the ground.
No one was hurt in the collision, which saw parts of the A49, A51 and A54-A51 closed for more than four hours as police made the road safe following the oil spill.
Police have confirmed that one vehicle was carrying insulation materials and the second was carrying light gear oil in containers.
Firefighters remained at the scene for around two hours stemming the oil leak and using liquid filled booms to prevent the oil from entering nearby drains.
Two casualties have been taken to hospital to be checked over by doctors.
