Church group takes lead on climate issue

Sep 14 2007

by Laurie Stocks-Moore, Chester Chronicle

RESIDENTS will raise the heat on global warming next month as they gather for a meeting on climate change.

Organisers hope the public forum will inspire the population of Upton to follow the lead of England’s first carbon neutral village, nearby Ashton Hayes.

John Hainsworth, of Churches Together, is inviting concerned residents to come to Upton United Reformed Church on October 3 with ideas that will stem the tide of rising sea levels with local action.

He said: ‘We are working to become an eco-congregation and are trying to demonstrate our concern for the earth.

‘We want to make sure we conserve gas, electricity and water and we act in an environmentally friendly way.

‘We are inspired by Ashton Hayes and their project to become England’s first carbon neutral village.’

Church elder Mr Hainsworth hopes local residents will be better informed about global warming and its consequences after the meeting.

Becky Hurst, from Christian Aid, will be on hand to inform attendees about the impact global warming has on third world countries and Dr Roy Alexander from CRed carbon reduction organisation will also give a talk.

Dr Alexander calculated the carbon footprint of Ashton Hayes before producing recommendations for individual households to reduce their carbon footprint.

Mr Hainsworth hopes residents will form an environmental group after the event.

He added: ‘The idea is to make a more environmentally friendly congregation.

‘The church itself is looking to lead the way. We have double glazing installed. We will also make the building better insulated.’

The church was recently subject to a Cheshire County Council eco audit which advised the replacement of light fittings and provided guidelines on water usage.

The meeting takes place at 7.30pm on October 3 in the Upton United Reformed Church. Admission is free and there will be refreshments.
