FRIGHTENED neighbours fear the monster who hacked off Stephen Prudhoe's genitals is still at large and free to strike again.
A week after the grisly discovery of his body, police are continuing the painstaking task of building up a profile of the victim.
He was mutilated - and his private parts removed from his Blacon Point Road home - AFTER he suffered a heart attack.
But detectives are hitting brick walls at every turn because the attack appears motiveless. No-one has a bad word to say about Mr Prudhoe, who is described as a private but friendly man.
Detectives hope test results will today eliminate Mr Prudhoe's dog, Milo, from any involvement.
Police have been told the attacker used a sharp instrument but they must eliminate the remote possibility that the pet could have bitten off the genitals or eaten them after they were detached by a third party.
What makes them confident an attacker is involved is that blood loss is consistent with mutilation occurring following Mr Prudhoe's death.
His death is being classed as natural causes because a post-mortem examination showed a heart attack and pneumonia contributed to his demise.
With no obvious sign of a forced entry, it is hoped forensic tests at Mr Prudhoe's home may reveal stray hairs, fibres or microscopic particles of DNA which could lead to their number-one suspect.
Latest unconfirmed reports are that Mr Prudhoe was last seen alive at about 2pm-2.30pm on Tuesday of last week, walking his dog near the Spar on Western Avenue. His body was found by a neighbour at 5.10pm the next day.
