'Godiva' protest at plight of horses

Apr 8 2004

By Jessica Shaughnessy, Chester Chronicle

A CAMPAIGNER will ride naked on horseback through Chester in a Lady Godiva-style protest against the export of live horses.

Deborah Wales

With just a long blonde wig covering her, Deborah Wales will take to the streets in a bid to help horses destined for European dinner plates.

'European legislation will make it legal for horses to be transported abroad alive in the most horrendous conditions,' said Deborah, of The Nook, Backford.

'Britain has the opportunity to opt out before the end of the month but that decision lies in the hands of Alun Michael, the minister of state for rural affairs and local environment quality.

'All he has to do is draft a piece of British legislation before the deadline, but so far he has done nothing.'

Deborah hopes other Lady Godivas across the country will join the crusade in the week following Easter and push Mr Michael into action.

She has not revealed the date and time she will carry out her protest because she knows she is at risk of being arrested.

But on the day, Deborah will ride Moomin the shire horse and little Goliath, a pony, will trot by their side bearing the Union flag.

The horses, which belong to the Equestrian Centre in Hope, will be followed by a handful of supporters carrying banners and handing out leaflets encouraging people to join the campaign.

After Chester, Deborah, an environmental lawyer, says she will carry out the protest in towns across the country until she gets to Whitehall.

You can help Deborah by calling DEFRA on 0845 9335577 and leaving a message for Mr Michael.
