Hunting ban Bill 'near'

Apr 26 2004

Daily Post

A BILL to ban fox hunting will be forced through Parliament by the end of the year, former sports minister Tony Banks predicted yesterday.

The Labour MP and vocal opponent of blood sports said the Government would use the Parliament Act to override House of Lords opposition.

Mr Banks said ministers had assured him the law would be passed in the next few months.

He said: "Unless they are lying through their teeth, then I am content that we'll deal with this issue by the time Parliament finishes in October."

It was not "the most significant issue" but if not tackled could damage the Government's credibility.

He added: "We have had since 1995, I think nine overwhelming votes by members of the House of Commons to effect a ban on hunting wild mammals with dogs.

"We are making the whole democratic process look a bit foolish by having these huge majorities by the elected members on nine occasions and we still haven't resolved it."
