A JUNIOR football match ended in chaos with punch-ups, pitch invasions and serious damage to a soccer ground. There was so much friction during the last 30 minutes of the Clwyd Junior Football League Under-17s final between the Blacon and Rhyl teams, that the man invited to present the trophy almost decided to blow the whistle and leave before handing over the silverware. Kevin Babb, of Mold Alex FC, said he was appalled by the behaviour of some players and spectators. 'The first half was fine and so was the start of the second,' he said. 'Then all hell broke loose, with at least six punch-ups among the players. 'Then apparently a woman supporting the Blacon side walked on to the pitch and started spitting at a Rhyl player. 'Then a Rhyl player was sent off and as he walked past a dug-out he swung on the supports and kicked the plastic roof to bits. I was nearly hit by flying debris.' Kevin is a former chairman, secretary and manager of Northop Junior FC. When the club wound up he used the remaining funds to buy the Clwyd Junior League trophy. He was shocked by the mayhem at the weekend match, adding: 'I've never seen such a debacle. 'I feel sorry for Flint Town FC who hosted the final in good faith - only to see their ground damaged. Flint Town United chairman Allan Baines left the ground just before trouble flared on and off the pitch. 'It's hugely disappointing when this kind of thing happens,' he said. 'The perspex cover of our dug-out was kicked to pieces by a Rhyl player. We are thinking of pressing for a criminal damage case to be brought against him. 'It will cost almost £200 to repair the dug out. The dressing room door was also kicked, but fortunately there was no damage. 'This type of behaviour is totally unacceptable. 'Although I'm very upset by what's happened, we'll still allow youngsters to use our pitch. I don't see why they should all suffer as the result of one idiot's actions.' Margaret Sewell, secretary of the Clwyd Junior Football League, said a copy of the referee's report on the match would go to both the North Wales Coast FA and the English FA. No-one from Blacon Colts was available for comment yesterday but Clwyd Junior League's executive committee announced it will be holding an emergency meeting next Tuesday to discuss disciplinary issues arising from the match between Rhyl Colts and Blacon Colts. League chairman Ken Partington, of Connah's Quay, said: 'This matter is being taken seriously.' |
