Study to pinpoint importance of ancient village

May 20 2004

Daily Post

PEOPLE living in a historic Cheshire village are to be asked to take part in a study to say why it is so important.

Ince, on the southern shore of the Mersey estuary, was built to support St Werburgh's Abbey, Chester.

It later became an estate connected to Ince Manor, a scheduled ancient monument which has recently been sold. The most important historic buildings are those associated with Ince Manor, which was recorded in the Domesday Book. But there are a number of other historic buildings in the village, notably the parish church.

Now a study of Ince Conservation Area is being carried out by Ellesmere Port and Neston Borough Council.

Conservation officer Peter Hoey said when the conservation area was created no one spelled out why it was important. Now, to protect its heritage, the council wants to specify what should be preserved and enhanced. This will also help the council when deciding on planning applications.

A draft Ince Conservation Area Character Appraisal has been drawn up, which assesses the special architectural and historic features in the village such as Ince Manor, the Cheshire sandstone buildings, the village square and medieval

street pattern. Mr Hoey said the aim of the new project was to use local people's knowledge of the village's history to ensure the document was accurate.

The study can be viewed at the council offices in Civic Way, Ellesmere Port, or on www.ellesmereportneston.gov.uk.
