Join us to beat waste scheme

Jun 9 2004

By Helen Cartwright, Northwich Chronicle

CAMPAIGNERS are begging the public to urgently register their objections to plans which could see an incinerator built in Northwich.

Cheshire's Draft Replacement Waste Plan, which identifies sites suitable to deal with the county's mounting waste problem, was put out for public consultation by the county council early last month.

The document includes a number of sites suitable for 'thermal treatment' plants, including one at former ICI land at Griffiths Road, between Lostock Gralam and Rudheath.

Pressure group CHAIN wants to see the sites removed from the plan to prevent any chance of an incinerator being built in Northwich, and has called on residents to register objections before public consultation finishes at noon on Wednesday, June 23.

Vale Royal borough councillors Tony Lawrenson and Jean Groom and county councillor George Mainwaring released a joint statement voicing their objections following a highly-charged meeting at Lostock Sports and Social Club on Monday night.

It read: 'It was unanimously agreed to oppose a possible thermal treatment plant being built on Lostock Works.

'We need the support of as many of the residents of Northwich, Rudheath, Lostock, Wincham and the surrounding areas as possible.

'The first thing to do is to get a copy of the representation form from Cheshire County Council, on this you can register opposition to the building of an incinerator by returning it to Cheshire County Council. You will have to move fast as the closing date is fast approaching.'

Copies of the draft replacement are available from Cheshire County Council which prefers responses to be made on the Consultation Response Form which can be downloaded off the website at www.cheshire.gov.uk.

Comments in writing can be sent to: Environmental Planning Service, Backford Hall, Backford, Chester, Cheshire CH1 6PZ.

Forms are available from Full of Beans Health Shop, Witton Street, Northwich, the Vale Royal Borough Council offices and local libraries.

A spokesman for CHAIN said: 'Incinerators produce harmful emissions, such as nitrous oxides, dioxins and particulates. These can have a harmful effect on health, especially for young children and babies in the womb.'
