Fight of our lives

Oct 20 2004

by Helen Cartwright, Chester Chronicle Newspapers

A NORTHWICH family have thanked local people for their support as they prepare for the biggest fight of their lives.

Relatives of Luke Winston-Jones are travelling to London's High Court this morning (Wednesday October 20) to fight a legal challenge launched by Alder Hey Hospital bosses, who want to stop treating the nine-month-old if his life-threatening condition worsens.

The fight over Luke, who has a hole in his heart and suffers from Edwards Syndrome, has caught the attention of the nation.

Mum Ruth Winston-Jones, formerly of Northwich, and aunts Jacqueline Kirkwood and Helen Winston-Jones, who live in the town, say they'll fight the legal challenge, which they have described as a 'death sentence'.

Mrs Kirkwood, of Lach Dennis, said: 'This has been very difficult for us but there is a huge amount of public support out there.

We have received messages of support from all over the world, including America, Japan, China, Spain and Australia.'

She added that the family was 'disgusted' by the hospital's actions.

She said: 'We were absolutely horrified - it's disgraceful, and discrimination against disabled people.'

Doctors say babies with Edwards Syndrome have an average lifespan of less than two months, but Luke's family say some sufferers can live for many years. They say that if they lose the hearing they will fly Luke to America for private treatment.

Luke's case will be highlighted on GMTV tomorrow (Thursday) and Tonight with Trevor McDonald on Friday.
