Charity workers are kept busy

Jan 19 2005

By Paul Newham, Crewe Chronicle

VOLUNTEERS at a charity shop in Crewe are working round the clock to deal with generous donations for the Indian Ocean tsunami appeal.

Staff at the Oxfam shop in Victoria Street have been inundated with money, clothes, blankets and other goods since the disaster.

They say they have never seen a response like it and are thanking the people of South Cheshire for their show of human kindness.

Meg Riley, who has volunteered at the shop for 21 years, said: 'This is the biggest disaster I have ever known and the response has just been fantastic.

'Some of us have worked 12-hour days since the dis-aster just to cope with the amount people are giving.

'It is great to see how willing everyone has been to help. The shop is nearly overflowing with goods, but we wouldn't ask people to stop giving for a minute.'

Although Oxfam is not shipping goods out direct to the disaster region because of the cost, it is urging the public to keep giving all they can to be sold on to raise much-needed funds.

The charity is also asking those who can spare a few hours to help to get in touch with their nearest shop.

Oxfam has recently published a list detailing the sort of things the public's money could buy.

A water bucket with tap costs just £2.50, a family hygiene kit costs £6 and a latrine slab to help stop the spread of disease where toilets have been destroyed costs £25.

An emergency shelter kit big enough to house a family of eight costs £118, and £185 will buy a ton of aluminium sulphate for water purification. nIf you would like to make a donation to the Victoria Street Oxfam shop, or would like to volunteer to help, call 01270 212799 for more information.
