Goal poacher to join hunt?

May 13 2005

By Rob Devey, Chester Chronicle

FRODSHAM'S flamboyant new Lord of The Manor, Liverpool footballer Djibril Cisse, has been invited to join the local fox hunt.

Cisse, who inherited the ancient title after buying Ridge Manor House on Manley Road, is at the centre of an extraordinary tug of war between the Cheshire Forest Hunt and animal rights campaigners.

The Animal Rights Coalition has urged its members to write to the French international striker, asking him to ban the hunt from his land.

But the hunt, which was invited to use the Ridge Manor grounds by previous owner Raymond Longster, wants to reach a similar arrangement with Cisse.

Joint Master Richard de Prez said: 'Mr Long-ster was part of the Holcombe Hunt in Lancashire but he used to invite us to use Ridge Manor and would hunt with us on those days.

'We hope to come to an arrangement with Mr Cisse and he is very welcome to join our hunt.

'I shall make a point of going to see him in the next few weeks.'

Mr de Prez claimed the Animal Rights Coalition campaign was 'pretty puerile'.

He added: 'Hunting has changed and although we do not like it we will abide by the law. They have won their particular battle so they shouldn't scream until they have been hurt.'

But Neil Lea, a member of the Animal Rights Coalition and editor of the ARC News magazine, said: 'We are asking our members to write to Mr Cisse via Liverpool Football Club and very politely ask him to ban the hunt from his land.'

Under the Hunting Act 2004, which came into effect in February, hunting with dogs is now a criminal offence.

But flushing out foxes to be shot using no more than two hounds, exercising hounds and chasing a scent trail remain legal.

Mr de Prez admitted his hunt intended to legally shoot foxes once the new hunting season gets under way, arguing it would be 'a service to farmers'.

Cisse, 23, whose fiancée is believed to hail from Elton, has already been spotted watching a primary school match at Frodsham Science and Technology College, where he signed autographs for young fans.
