Safety system to help the elderly and weak

Dec 8 2005

By Adrian Short, Weekly News

PATIENTS recovering from operations and the elderly are being targeted by a pioneering scheme which aims to help people remain independent in their own homes.

Halton Borough Council's intermediate care service has teamed up with the NHS to launch the Telecare system which works through a series of electronic sensors to boost safety in the home.

Demonstrations are being held and potential customers are being shown how the system can be tailored to respond to certain kinds of incidents and meet individual requirements.

The equipment is supplied free of charge during a trial period and then has to be paid for afterwards.

Residents are being encouraged to take part in the demonstrations and give feedback.

In the event of an incident the sensors will trigger an alarm which will either call a relative, warden or the ambulance service.

Sessions will be staffed by the Mobile Warden Service which will demonstrate how the technology for Telecare can work to support people, and will be on hand to answer any questions.

Cllr Tom McInerney, Halton council's executive board member for health and community, said: 'The council plans to make Telecare accessible to the whole community after this pilot project has finished, as it's fast, effective and takes away the worry of what might happen if you had an accident at home.

'Telecare can trigger an alarm that indicates something is wrong, from detecting excess smoke in the kitchen, to floods in the bathroom.

'It can tell if an area is too hot - for instance if the cooker has been left on, or the house is too cold because there is no heating on. It can even detect if you've had a fall or can't get out of bed.'
