Incinerator health fear

Jan 9 2006

By Eleanor Barham, Liverpool Echo

A LARGE incinerator in Ellesmere Port would increase the risk of asthma, cancer and heart disease across the region, say health experts.

The multi-million pound scheme creating 1,100 jobs will see 600,000 tonnes of waste burned each year by Peel Holdings, the company which owns Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Mersey Docks and Harbour Company.

Peel insists the incinerator planned for Ince Marshes near Ellesmere Port will not present any danger as toxic elements will be removed before burning.

But campaigners have promised to fight the proposals after warnings that people living as far away as Toxteth, Huyton and Bebington could be affected by the fumes.

Dr Chris Busby, EU child health expert, said: "Small particles will move within a 10-mile radius.

"These are a serious health hazard as they can increase the risk of heart disease, asthma and cancer."

He claims pollution would be limited to Helsby and Ellesmere Port on calm days, but the burnt waste could be blown further afield by wind.

Lance Yates a spokesman for Residents Against the Incinerator said: "It's a fact there is already more cancer in this area because of pollution. This is just going to make it worse."

Myles Kitcher, development manager in charge of the Ince project, said: "We would not be able to get a planning consent or pollution prevention and control permit if there was any danger of causing a health risk to the local community."

Mike Hall MP for Weaver Vale, in whose constituency the incinerator may be built, said: "We need a full public inquiry to deal with the planning application."
