OAPs are saved by sensors in home

Feb 15 2006

Northwich Chronicle

A RETIRED couple say their 'intelligent' flat saved their lives.

Jim and Evelyn Taylor from Rud-heath say hi-tech gizmos built into their Heathbrook Cottages bungalow may have saved their lives, after sensors detected a leak from their gas cooker.

It was picked up by a Telecare sensor installed in the kitchen, which automatically alerted Weaver Vale Housing Trust's Careline control centre who contacted Transco. Engineers arrived within 30 minutes to deal with the leak.

Jim, 73, who has lived in Northwich all his life, said: 'The staff at Weaver Vale Housing Trust were incredible - and they could have saved our lives.

'They spoke to us from their control centre and told us to open all the doors and windows, and they contacted Transco immediately.

'You couldn't smell the gas, so we were lucky that the sensor picked it up. You never think something like this is going to happen, so having the Telecare technology gives us real peace of mind.'

Lena Dewsbury, Telecare manager, said: 'Although natural gas is not poisonous, if allowed to build up in a small space, it can be ignited by a spark from a light switch or mobile phone.

'The natural gas sensor was triggered late at night and Careline staff took immediate action to alert Transco and also kept in close telephone contact with Mr and Mrs Taylor to ensure their safety.

'This highlights the importance of assistive technology - allowing people who are elderly or disabled to live independently while feeling safe in their own homes.'

The Trust is leading the way with Telecare technology and in partner-ship with Cheshire County Council is involved with a Government initiative enabling Telecare technology to become mainstream.
