OPPONENTS to tolling on the second Mersey crossing have been warned they could still scupper the whole project.
Council leader Tony McDermott says it is inevitable motorists will have to pay.
However, he says any widespread anti-toll campaign could put the scheme in danger.
He said: 'To date we have made the case and won the case for Government support for the project but it is also built on the assumption of road charging or tolls.
'Quite simply, there will never be a free-to-user crossing built here or anywhere else in the future.
'The question of discounts for locals is one which is still to be resolved and everyone - including the Government - acknowledges that.
'But to campaign now for a particular outcome eight years on will be fruitless and could jeopardise the whole project.
'To date we have had all-party support on the bridge - let's hope it continues.'
Cllr McDermott added: 'There are many hurdles still to cross but the prize for Halton in succeeding is huge - as it is for the whole of Merseyside, both in terms of jobs and regeneration.'
