Church's anger over nude club

Sep 15 2006

Chester Chronicle

A LAPDANCE club's move to full nudity has been condemned by the Bishop of Chester and other clergymen.

The Church has hit out at the extension of the Platinum Lounge's licence.

This will allow dancers to perform in a restricted access dance room at the Bridge Street Row premises which opened to controversy last November.

Initial licensing restrictions meant that the girls were previously only allowed to perform topless.

In his reaction to the news, the Bishop of Chester, the Rt Revd Dr Peter Forster, said: 'I dislike all activities which either demean and exploit other human beings, or which separate human sexual attraction from its proper basis in responsible human relationships.'

Platinum Lounge co-owner, Nigel Woodhouse, believes that it is a great step forward for the venue and that it puts them on par with other major lapdancing clubs in the country.

He says that if the club is operated correctly lapdancing can be carried out by elegant dancers in long and sleek glamorous dresses without being dirty or sleazy.

The Revd David Chesters, however, said: 'It is sad that our society has become so hedonistic that it seems to have lost all sense of moral values.

'People must make up their own minds about what this club is doing, after all we live in a democracy, but from the Church's point of view anything that seeks to corrupt, and especially to corrupt the young and the vulnerable, is morally wrong.

'Having previously worked as a law enforcement officer in Soho, London, I've seen a lot of life, and I am not easily shocked. Nude lap-dancers would not shock me.

'Nudity per se is not wrong; after all we enter this world with nothing on at all, and some of us leave it that way too.

'However, when commerciallystaged nudity seeks to sexually excite, when it places young women to dance at the whim of others, in other words to exploit for both gain and sexual gratification, then we must ask ourselves just where is our society heading and what are the messages that we are sending out.'
