A blast of wintry weather sweeping the country is expected to send temperatures plummeting to as low as -5C, bringing more snow and icy conditions, forecasters said. Eastern and south-east England will be the worst affected over the next couple of days, with Kent likely to see the heaviest falls.
Up to 10cm of snow is expected on higher ground as overnight temperatures drop below zero, bringing with them the risk of widespread ice.
Forecasters said the chilly weather would last into the weekend but does not herald a return to the big freeze which caused chaos last month.
Andy Radcliffe, forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said snow showers in the East would be broken up by sunny spells today and tomorrow.
"It looks like the cold weather's going to stay for the rest of the week. There are going to be some more snow showers in eastern areas and most of these will be in Kent, East Sussex, Essex and Suffolk.
