Homes to be built for people with autism

Sep 24 2003

By Chris Smith, Ellesmere Port Pioneer

A NUMBER of specialist homes for people with autism are being built in Ellesmere Port.

Described as a 'greatly-needed resource', the homes are being developed by Dane Housing, in partnership with the county council, at Dover Mews in the town.

This will consist of a total of eight houses and bungalows, providing accommodation for 18 people.

A Dane Housing spokeswoman said there is currently a lack of resources for people with autism, who require professional, specialist care and support.

Once the homes are built, the council's social services team will provide on-going care and support to residents.

This is one of the first schemes of its kind in the UK, where residents will be regarded as tenants rather than patients.

The homes are being built on behalf of Dane Housing by J & S Seddon (Building) Limited.

An activity and life-skills room, and a respite centre, will also be provided as part of the development.

Work officially started on Dover Mews on Friday. To mark the occasion a time capsule, containing items donated by the residents, was buried.
