CCTV set for a safe path home

Dec 10 2003

By Chris Smith Ellesmere Port Pioneer

SECURITY cameras could be installed on a new footpath to en-sure the safety of schoolchildren.

CCTV is just one measure being considered for the path being built to link Randle Meadow in Whitby to Woodlands Junior School.

Janet Mills, the county council's principal advisor on safer routes to school, said around 600 pupils attend the junior and infant schools, in Eddisbury Road.

She added: 'The traffic generated by the schools causes congestion on the roads and creates hazards for pupils crossing them.

'The schools receive regular complaints from residents about their driveways being obstructed by cars.

'The proposed footpath will reduce the distance walked by the children from the Strawberry Fields area, and encourage more children to walk.

'The path may also encourage more parents to park their vehicles on Randle Meadow. However, this will be monitored to ensure it doesn't create a nuisance for local residents.'

Miss Mills told the Ellesmere Port & Neston Highways & Transportation Local Joint Committee the path will start at the Randle Meadow wooded footpath and run to the school playing field via Randle Meadow playground.

There will be a lockable gate in the school fence line, which will be open from 8.45-9.15am and 3-3.45pm.

Miss Mills said in her report: 'The governor and headteacher of Woodlands have agreed to compliment the path with a number of physical measures to enhance the area.

'These may include a CCTV camera focused on the path, a covered waiting area, and shrubbery planting.

'The need for some lighting will be examined when the path has come into use. The planned traffic calming measures in Eddisbury Road will offer the pupils a safer crossing point.'

She said the scheme will be funded from the Local Transport Plan's Safer Routes to School capital budget and through a contribution from a developer in Willowdale Way.
