Circus visit sparks animal rights storm

May 9 2007

Northwich Chronicle

A CIRCUS arriving at Hartford Golf Club today has provoked outrage.

Circus Mondao insist their animals are treated 'better than pets', but animal rights activists are furious.

Nicky Green of Whatcroft, said: 'The whole circus thing is absolutely horrendous.

'There is so much cruelty involved, from the way they're treated, the way they are trained, the way they travel between towns, everything.

'The sooner animals are banned from being used in the circus the better. Children don't realise all the cruelty that goes on behind the scenes.'

Two zebras - Zebedee and Sinbad - appear alongside llamas, goats, ponies, horses and Samantha the mule.

Petra Jackson of Circus Mondao said her animals are treated well: 'The false accusation that we're cruel is like saying somebody is a paedophile when they're not.

'Our animals do exactly the same things as horses in galas, or dogs at Crufts, but because we are under the banner of 'circus', we get criticised.

'Riding schools are terrible for making horses work seven-hour days. Ours have five minutes work a night. They have a brilliant life.

'Our animals do country shows, galas and TV shows but their treatment is only ever questioned when they're with the circus.

'You have to see things with your own eyes and we give kids the opportunity to see animals they wouldn't otherwise be able to.'

The circus runs until Sunday.
