Drugs raids hailed as success

A MASSIVE police operation targeting 'the scourge of society' resulted in 23 people across Northwich and Winsford charged with drugs offences. More than 300 officers raided the homes of 37 suspected drug dealers in a series of synchronised dawn swoops on Wednesday in the biggest drugs bust ever carried out by Cheshire Constabulary. A total of 32 people were arrested, and 23 subsequently charged. Twenty-one people, including two women and four teenage boys, appeared at Chester Magistrates Court on Thursday morning. All but two were remanded in custody. The raids, part of police's Operation Crackdown, were the culmination of five months of work and intelligence gathering by Cheshire Constabulary, and the operation was hailed a success. 'These people are the scourge of society,' said Det Insp Peter Merrill. 'They target vulnerable members of the community and they all believe they are untouchable. This proves they are not and some of them are now facing lengthy prison sentences.'
