Service offers the chance to remember loved ones

Sep 20 2006

Northwich Chronicle

A WOMAN who lost her son to the deadly superbug MRSA laid flowers dedicated to victims of hospital infections at a moving ceremony held at Westminster Abbey.

Mavis Law, pictured, of Beckenham Grove, Winsford, was invited to the commemorative service in London in her role as founder of charity MRSA Action UK, which she started last year.

The campaigner, whose 32-year-old son Colin died in 2003 after contracting MRSA in hospital, says she was honoured to attend the service, which gave her a chance to meet others touched by similar tragedies.

She said: 'There were about sixty members and guests taking part and I was very happy to meet Wendy and Paul Kelly, who live in Rudheath, and have become members of our group MRSA Action UK. Sadly they lost their 26-year-old daughter to MRSA in 2004.

'I was over-whelmed not only with the service but especially by the children in the choir in Westminster Abbey.

'After evensong there was a special flower-laying ceremony outside at the Innocent Victims Memorial, and prayers were given for all victims of healthcare acquired infections including those who have survived.

'I had the privilege to lay a beautiful blue rose for Rod Johnson, from Acton Bridge, on behalf of his brother, Stephen, and their dear mother.

'Sadly Rod has MRSA for the second time and we send good wishes to his family.'
