Sex health expert fears 'epidemic'

Sep 1 2004

Northwich Chronicle

NEW figures indicating a looming crisis in the spread of sexually-transmitted infections (STIs) across Mid Cheshire have infuriated a sexual health expert.

Simon Cole, from Condom Solutions in Winsford, is warning of an epidemic if action is not taken to curb the problem.

Leighton Hospital in Crewe has released figures which show that since 1995 the number of people with gonorrhoea has rocketed by 1,200%.

And the number of people with chlamydia, which can cause infertility, rose by 114% during the same period.

Statistics also show the Central Cheshire Primary Care Trust (PCT), which includes Leighton Hospital and Northwich's Victoria Infirmary, are currently treating 44 cases of HIV.

Mr Cole, who has been working in sexual health for more than 10 years, claims that STIs are soaring because young people do not have easy access to condoms.

He said: 'Condoms are often overpriced and embarrassing to buy. But safe sex needs to be at the forefront of people's minds if we are to really make a difference and stop this epidemic before it spins out of control.

'Condoms should be available in hairdressing salons, clothes shops, off-licences, record stores and other places where young people socialise and spend their time.'

Mr Cole, who has worked on programmes in South Africa, Brazil and India, suggests a three-pronged approach, involving: PCTs - improving condom distribution with a more co-ordinated approach; for example by appointing a dedicated Condom Tsar to liaise with the private sector.

Businesses - encouraging holiday companies, pubs, clubs, hairdressers, clothes shops and other businesses to play their part in changing sexual behaviour by stocking condoms and encour-aging safe sex.

Schools, colleges and universities - educating young people about the dangers of STIs and persuading them to act responsibly.

Mr Cole has already been called in to lend his advice on sexual health to a number of organisations, and is currently working with Trafford and Nottingham PCTs, universities in Gloucester, Manchester, Sheffield, London, and Brook Clinics in Liverpool and Manchester.
